Princess Mononoke
This 1997 animation, set in the late Muromachi period of Japan with fantasy elements, follows a young prince's struggle between the gods of a forest and the humans who consume its resources. This piece features two scenes from the film.
SPOTLIGHT: The close up on the left is inspired by the scene where we meet Princess Mononoke for the first time. Ashitaka stumbles across Mononoke sucking blood out of a wolf god's wound.
Spirited Away
This film tells the story of Chihiro, a sullen ten-year-old girl who, while moving to a new town , stumbles into the spirit world. This piece contains many references from the film. Find Chihiro's pig-turned parents eating at the restaurant, the soot and Kamagi in the boiler room and the paper birds sprinkled throughout the composition.
SPOTLIGHT: Whichever way you flip the piece, Chihiro and Haku are always on opposite ends, representing how they they come from two different worlds.
Ponyo
Released in 2008, this animated fantasy comedy's plot centers on a goldfish named Ponyo. After befriending a five-year-old boy, Sosuke, Ponyo becomes determined to become human. This piece features Ponyo, Sosuke, the house of Sosuke's mother as well as Ponyo's brothers and sisters swimming towards their mother.
SPOTLIGHT: With the magic of the sea at her disposal, Ponyo transforms into a little girl and shows up at Sosuke's doorstep.
